Today. I ran a 5k.

"Stage 4 to 5k. what do you think?" This was Jonathan scheming yesterday on what sign to make for me as preparing to run Chick-fil-A's Founders Week 5k.

Instead he ran ahead of me, and cheered me on. No signs, but both of us taking note of what we would have said was impossible 2 1/2 years ago... and 2 1/2 months ago.

No scan updates. No vaccine updates. Just a grateful heart.

Lot's of days I fight off cynicism and sadness. Of what my stomach looks like. Of what my energy feels like. Of what my life has turned out to be. Of what uncertainty might lie ahead.

But what joy to have a body that has seemingly betrayed you be restored to the joy of running. (And without walking at that ... thanks to my friend Emi, who one mile in said "I think we should try to run the whole thing.")

Like most things in life this feels like shadows of things to come. This is a redeemed body, brought about by time, grit, hard work, and patience. But what will those glorified bodies look like? Minds free of cynicism and sadness?

Today was a glimpse.

Today was not really about running. It was about hope restored, where what is mortal will be swallowed up by life.

"For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.  For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling,  if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked.  For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.  He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord,  for we walk by faith, not by sight.  Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.  So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.  For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil."

From Psalm 116

“I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live. The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish. Then I called on the name of the Lord: “O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!” Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you. For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling; I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living. What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord,”

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭116‬:‭1‬-‭9‬, ‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭ESV‬‬
